The floating nuclear power station Academic Lomonosov under construction to the RS class has been launched at the Baltiysky Zavod shipyard.
Russia pioneers construction of the first ever floating nuclear power station (FNPS). Entirely self-contained FNPS Academic Lomonosov with an increased safety reactor facility to supply the Far North and Far East is intended for production and distribution of the electrical and heat energy to shore-based facilities.
The estimated power output of the plant is 70 mV of electrical and 300 mV of heat energy.
The FNPS complies with the current safety and environment standards and requirements providing the possibility to use it in the vicinity of residential areas as well as to incorporate it into facilities of various purposes. The FNPS will allow implementation of projects requiring self-contained and uninterrupted power supply in lack of a developed power supply system. Such FNPS may also be used during the extraction and sea transportation of hydrocarbons in the regions suffering from power supply shortages, such as the Far North and tropical regions. FNPS may also serve as a base for a water desalination installation.
The FNPS Academic Lomonosov is being constructed under the survey of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping – the only classification society in the world to have civil nuclear power ships in its class.
