Ship’s voluntary certification under Maritime Labour Convention 2006

The new Maritime Labour Convention (the MLC), adopted on the 94th ILO Conference, consolidates more than 70 existing ILO maritime labour instruments.
The MLC will come into force 12 months after it has been ratified by at least 30 ILO member-states with a total share of merchant fleet gross tonnage 33 per cent. Each member-state will be responsible for ensuring implementation of its obligations under the MLC on ships flying its flag.
The MLC requirements will apply to all ships. Ships of 500 gross tonnage and over engaged in international voyages shall carry the Maritime Labour Certificate.
To facilitate the implementation of the MLC requirements by shipowners before the MLC goes into effect, RS performs ship’s voluntary certification for compliance with the MLC requirements:
  • review and certification of the Voluntary Declaration of Maritime Labour Compliance;
  • voluntary certification of ships for compliance with the MLC requirements;
  • issuance and endorsement of the Maritime Labour Certificate;
  • voluntary certification of crewing agencies.
